Get Ready For Spring!

It’s the end of February, and according to Punxsutawney Phil, spring is just around the corner. Are you – and your yard – ready for the warmer spring weather? You can make your beautiful home even better with a beautifully landscaped yard. Here are a few ways you can get ready now, so that you can have a stunning garden when spring finally arrives.
Design Time
Take time now to plan your garden or landscaping. It takes a lot of forethought to create a yard that complements your home and neighborhood. Before you start buying and planting, look around online or in home and garden magazines to get some ideas. There are many ways to convert old materials into upcycled landscape décor. Don’t forget to plan for plants that bloom at different times, so you can have flowers all season long.
With a little research, you will be able to find a way to landscape on any budget. And with so many ideas online, you might end up creating an unexpected, but exciting, landscaping plan!
Start Composting
If you don’t already have one, now is a good time to start creating a compost pile. Save food and yard waste in an out-of-the-way corner of your backyard, or in a container close to the house (for easy disposal of kitchen waste). Things that you can save for a compost pile include:
- dead plant material from the yard
- leaves
- weeds
- egg shells
- vegetable scraps
- coffee grounds
There are ways to speed up the composting process. But, if you don’t want to get too technical, you can just throw it all in a container and wait. Keep adding new material to the top. In a few months, you’ll be able to stir it up and find rich, dark compost from the bottom of the pile.
Grow Your Own Seedlings
By the end of February or beginning of March, you can start growing your own seedlings indoors, so they are ready to plant outside in April or May. This is cheaper than buying starter plants. If you have kids, it also makes a fun science lesson about how plants grow. Egg cartons make a great, cheap container for planting seeds. Water them regularly, keep them in a sunny window, and watch how fast they grow!
Build a Backyard Pond
Finally, you can take this time to build a fun and attractive backyard pond. With or without fish, a pond is a gorgeous addition to any backyard. And, late winter is a good time to start. As soon as the ground has thawed, and you are able to dig out a spot for the pond, then get to work! As spring arrives, your new pond will quickly fill with wildlife like frogs, toads, dragonflies, and even birds.
