Great Family Days Out if you Live in Tooele, Utah

Utah homebuilders know that Tooele can be a fantastic place to live. It can be an easy commute to downtown Salt Lake City if you need to get to work and it’s not far from the shores of Great Salt Lake. But sometimes it can be good to get away from your everyday world and get a change of scenery, even if you do have relaxing home decor. A day trip can be an ideal way to reset your batteries and refresh your mind. Plus, it lets you spend some quality time with your family as you get to know your local area.
Horseshoe Springs, Skull Valley
Horseshoe Springs is only about an hour’s drive west of Tooele, and can be a great place to cool down on a hot summer’s day by swimming in the springs. The springs are surrounded by nature and there’s a walking trail that can let you view birds and other wildlife while you stroll. As well as swimming and hiking, it’s also possible to fish, with the springs being home to bass and carp. While you’re in the area, you can also check out the ghost town of Iosepa, which is just a short drive away. Remember to pack plenty of water and food, as there’s not much in the way of services or amenities nearby.
Deseret Peak Wilderness, Stansbury Mountains
The Deseret Peak Wilderness area can make you feel like you’re miles from anywhere when you’re only 30 to 40 minutes away from Tooele in the Stansbury Mountains. It can be a fantastic day trip for the whole family, with plenty of fresh air, wildlife, stunning scenery and great hiking. Whether you want to fish in the trout waters or hike through aspen groves, you can do it at Deseret Peak. There are also plenty of campgrounds if you want to turn your day trip into a weekend adventure. If you like to hike, head up to the summit of Deseret Peak (the trail starts at the Loop Campground) for incredible views across four states.
Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, Dugway
Just a two hour drive away from Tooele you’ll find Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge. This almost 18,000 acre refuge can be a fantastic place to spot rare birds and other wildlife and it provides an important habitat for migratory birds. It can be a great place for kids to spot different species that they might not usually see. Make sure you have your camera, as it can be a wonderful spot for wildlife photography. The area is home to many wildlife species, so keep your eyes peeled for wild mustang, pronghorn antelope and golden eagles. There are hiking paths through the refuge as well as an auto tour route. Fish Springs is one of the most isolated wildlife refuges in the country so remember to load up your car with gas to get you there and back, as well as plenty of food and water for the day.
